Hair Transplant Techniques – FUT, FUE, DHT

There are three main ways in which donor grafts are extracted today, one is strip excision harvesting, also known as follicular unit transplantation (FUT), follicular unit extraction (FUE) and Direct Hair Transplant (DHT)

FUT method involves cutting of a strip of scalp from the back of head and then dissecting it into individual grafts to achieve a set for the bald area. This method is suitable for people who have larger areas of baldness and would like it covered in single sitting. People should not mind cuts, stitches and longer recover period if they opt for this method.

In FUE, individual follicular units are extracted one by one from the back of the head and this is achieved through a tiny specialized machine. The process is quite minute and takes hours to get completed. But it is a painless procedure as the area is numbed by local anesthesia. People with smaller areas of baldness can go for this method if they decide to sport shorter hairstyles post surgery. This is a less invasive procedure and involves minimum cuts and stitches on the scalp. This offers faster recovery too.

After the extraction is done by using either of FUT or FUE method, the fixing of hair follicles or grafts to the bald area is done. This remains the same after any of the techniques used for extraction. To transplant the follicles into balding site, tiny holes are created using very fine blades and needles in the balding areas. Of course the area is numbed properly with the help of local anesthesia before starting the procedure. The extracted hair grafts are then inserted through these tiny holes or sites in the balding area.

DHT (Direct Hair Transfer) is an advanced version of FUE method where follicular units are extracted individually from the donor area of the patient. This is done with the help of a manual extractor, without using a motor. The extracted follicles are then implanted into the balding patches, with a patented device which is called a transplater. Reception holes are not created in DHT technique, which remains the major difference. The donor area can be the scalp or other areas of body like the beard, chest or pubic region of the patient, where hair growth is optimum. In this technique attention is given to the placement of the follicles where the angle, depth and direction of grafts is kept in mind which finally gives 100% natural results.

Which is better FUT or FUE or DHT?

What measures need to be taken after the surgery?

It is important to follow post-surgery instructions and take good care of the grafts. Swelling of the scalp, the face is common for a few days. In case of FUT, the absolute care of surgical sound is necessary till the sutures are removed and the wound dries up.
